ACTION ALERT: Tell the Senate Appropriations Committee to Restore IDA Funding

IDA Funding

take action now
The Senate Appropriations Committee has the next opportunity to restore slashed IDA funding when they consider the budget bill (HB 1001). Contact members of the Senate Appropriations Committee and ask them to appropriate no less than $1 million a year for the state's IDA program. Call 800-382-9842 or email to contact your local legislator.

The Issue:

The proposed state budget would slash funding for the successful Individual Development Account (IDA) program in half. The Senate Appropriations Committee has the next opportunity to restore IDA funding when they consider the budget bill (HB 1001). Despite tough economic times, until now Indiana has protected this important tool for Hoosier families by providing the minimum $1 million needed to meet the mission of the program. However, the proposed budget would cut that funding by half to $500,000. Compounding the problem, Indiana stands to lose federal matching funds for each dollar cut, so Hoosier families would double their losses if the Senate does not act to restore the state’s share.

IDA programs consist of matched savings accounts that enable low-income families to save, gain assets, and enter the financial mainstream. Read about the success of Indiana’s IDA program in Dan Carpenter’s recent IndyStar column here. Read the Institute’s new IDA Policy Brief here.
