What is Project Good START?
Purpose: To provide a survey, community assessment, and planning tool to the state of Indiana’s smaller, often neglected communities. This tool will help the community identify, assess, and focus upon priority issues. Project Good START was initiated by Great Lakes RCAP in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Wisconsin in 2002 and is still going strong in Indiana.
Elements of the Good START Process:
- Enrollment and formation of a steering committee representing a broad spectrum of community interests
- Development and distribution of a household (door-to-door) survey
- Survey of local businesses
- Survey of High School Students
- Interviews with community and business spokespersons
- Community forum – the public is invited
- Written summary report to the community
- Formation of single-issue task forces and work plans
- Follow-up with the network: staff visits, communication and possible project-specific technical assistance as applicable to the community
